“I've seen Josh at BetterMe Physiotherapy in Gillingham for a sports massage as part of my general maintenance routine. As a runner and regular gym user, it's essential for me to keep my muscles in good shape.”

How I approach sports massage

I don't see sports massage as simply lying on a table, having someone work on a tight muscle and then being sent away.

I personalise the treatment to the person in front of me and what they're trying to achieve. That could be someone training regularly, preparing for an event, playing sport, going to the gym or simply wanting to feel more comfortable and move better.

I'll consider what you're doing, your training and activity load, recovery and what you're experiencing, rather than just treating the area that feels tight.

Massage can absolutely be useful, but I want to be honest about what it can and can't do. It's not necessarily the thing that fixes the problem.

What a session includes

Combined and adapted based on what the assessment finds, not applied as a fixed routine.

01

Deep tissue massage

Sustained, focused pressure through deeper muscle layers to release long standing tension and restriction.

02

Sports massage

Targeted work for training, competition and recovery, whether you are preparing, recovering or mid block.

03

Soft tissue release

Specific techniques for tight, overloaded tissue that is limiting movement and comfort.

04

Myofascial and trigger point

Addressing referred pain patterns and fascial restriction that often sit behind stubborn symptoms.

Why it is not just a massage

Hands on work, personalised

Assessed first, not just treated

A look at how you move and load before any hands go on, so the work is aimed at the right tissue.

Combined with the wider picture

Where appropriate, exercise, movement advice and addressing what is actually contributing to the problem.

When hands on work is part of a bigger plan

Massage settles things. Understanding why keeps them settled.

Immediate relief from hands on treatment
An explanation of why it keeps returning
Loading that changes the underlying cause
Fewer appointments needed over time

“I visited Josh for a deep tissue massage. That evening I had a very good sleep. The next day I expected painful muscles but the aches were a lot less than normal and I even walked about 2.5 miles with a lot less pain in my knees.”

Common questions

What is the difference between sports massage and deep tissue?
Sports massage is generally geared around training and recovery, deep tissue focuses on sustained pressure through deeper layers to release long standing tension. In practice we combine both based on what you need.
Are you a sports massage therapist or a physiotherapist?
Both. The difference from a standalone massage therapist is that the treatment is delivered by an HCPC registered MSK physiotherapist, so you also get an explanation of why the tension keeps coming back.
How often should I have a sports massage?
It depends what you want from it. For recovery around heavy training blocks, every two to four weeks suits most people. If you are coming because something specific keeps tightening up, the honest answer is that regular massage alone will not fix it, and we would rather find out why it keeps happening.
Does it hurt?
It can be intense in places but should never be unbearable. Pressure is always adjusted to what works for you.
