Neck Pain Treatment in Rainham & Medway

Neck pain that rarely stays in the neck

It refers into the shoulder blade, up into the head as headaches, or down the arm. Treating only the sore spot is why it keeps coming back.

How I approach neck pain

I commonly see desk workers, people with headaches, stress and tension related symptoms, and people who have been dealing with persistent neck pain for a long time.

As with everything I do, I don't look at the neck in isolation. I want to understand the story behind the problem and consider movement, strength, lifestyle, sleep, stress, habits and the person's beliefs and behaviours around their pain.

I'll also assess for symptoms that could indicate something requiring further investigation, such as symptoms travelling into the arms, pins and needles, numbness, weakness or other neurological signs.

Common drivers

Neck pain usually has more than one of these behind it, which is why the examination matters more than the label.

01

Postural and work related

Sustained positions at a desk or in the car load the neck and upper back in ways they are not built to tolerate all day.

02

Joint and muscular

Facet joint irritation and deep muscular tension produce genuine local pain and stiffness, often worse first thing.

03

Cervicogenic headaches

Headaches that start at the base of the skull often come from the upper neck, and treating the neck is what settles them.

04

Whiplash and trauma

After a road traffic accident or fall the neck usually needs graded reintroduction of movement rather than protection.

Hands on work plus the right loading

How we treat neck pain

Establish which structures are involved

Facet joints, deep muscular tension, the upper cervical spine and referral from the shoulder all behave differently under testing. That is what shapes the plan.

Personalised treatment

Soft tissue work or joint mobilisation where appropriate, but these are part of a broader plan rather than the plan itself.

Build confidence and capacity

Movement, strength and loading so you aren't simply relying on treatment to keep your neck feeling better.

A whole picture approach

Common questions

How long is an appointment and how many will I need?
The first appointment is long enough for me to take a full history, examine you and explain what I have found before you leave, rather than a rushed slot. I will give you an honest estimate at the assessment rather than an open ended plan, and if you end up needing fewer sessions than I thought, I will say so.
Can neck pain cause headaches?
Yes, very commonly. Cervicogenic headaches originate in the upper cervical spine and often present as pain at the base of the skull spreading forward. They typically respond well to treatment directed at the neck.
My neck pain came on with no injury. Is that normal?
Very. Most neck pain has no single moment behind it. Sustained postures, workload, stress and sleep all change how tolerant the neck is, and the pain often appears once tolerance drops below what an ordinary day demands. That is diagnosable and treatable. It just is not an injury.
Do you treat whiplash?
Yes. Graded, guided reintroduction of movement is generally far more effective than rest or immobilisation.
